Schedule EIC 2026 (Form 1040): Draft PDF & Earned Income Credit Qualifying Child Information Guide

This Schedule EIC 2026 guide explains the IRS Earned Income Credit Qualifying Child Information. Schedule EIC identifies qualifying children for earned income credit purposes. It is not the full earned income credit calculation by itself. Relationship, age, residence and identification information must be consistent with the credit rules and with the rest of the return.

Follow any instructions about electronic filing, scannable copies, recipient copies or attachments.

Which version of Schedule EIC 2026 should you use?

The 2026 in the title identifies the tax year or calendar-year information addressed by this guide. For a 2026 income reporting document, the preparation or filing activity may occur in 2027. Do not change the income year simply because the calendar has changed. The exact filing or furnishing date comes from the instructions for this form and the filer circumstances. The linked target PDF is a draft. It may be used to understand the proposed layout, but it is not a form to file. Amounts or instructions still subject to completion must be checked again when the final version is released.

Records to gather for Schedule EIC 2026

  • Child identification records.
  • Relationship details.
  • Residence records.
  • Income information.
  • Records relevant to any shared-household issue.

Keep a working reconciliation with these records. It should show the source of each reported item, any correction made before filing and the reason a different amount appears on a connected form. This is especially useful when a statement is corrected or a prior-year balance continues into the current calculation.

How to work through Schedule EIC 2026

  1. Confirm applicability. Start with the purpose, filer category and version of the form. Complete any eligibility or applicability question before spending time on the numerical calculation.
  2. Prepare the source workpapers. Gather the records listed below and reconcile their totals. Keep prior-year balances, current-year transactions and estimated payments separate where they serve different purposes.
  3. Complete dependent calculations first. When a line refers to another form, schedule or worksheet, finish that supporting calculation first. Preserve any classification, limitation and carryforward information.
  4. Follow the line sequence. Use the actual line labels and arithmetic in the applicable form. A line number from an older version may refer to something different after a revision.
  5. Reconcile the filing package. Check names, identifying numbers, tax periods, totals and required attachments. Then use the filing method, signature process and deadline that apply to this filer and form.

Form-specific IRS instructions and reporting details

The following points retain the operative wording of the IRS documents linked above. Read each point with its stated conditions and the applicable form version. References to another form or section describe a connected requirement; they do not mean that every reader must file every referenced document.

Complete and attach to Form 1040 or 1040-SR only if you have a qualifying child. Go to the IRS website for the latest information.

• See the instructions for Form 1040, line 27a, to make sure that (a) you can take the EIC, and (b) you have a qualifying child. See also Pub. 596. • Be sure the child’s name on line 1 and social security number (SSN) on line 2 agree with the child’s social security card. Otherwise, at the time we process your return, we may reduce your EIC.

If the name or SSN on the child’s social security card is not correct, call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213. • If you have a child who meets the conditions to be your qualifying child for purposes of claiming the EIC, but that child doesn’t have an SSN as defined in the instructions for Form 1040, line 27a, see the instructions.

2 Child’s SSN The child must have an SSN as defined in the instructions for Form 1040, line 27a, unless the child was born and died in 2026 or you are claiming the self-only EIC (see instructions). If your child was born and died in 2026 and did not have an SSN, enter “Died” on this line and attach a copy of the child’s birth certificate, death certificate, or hospital medical records showing a live birth.

If born after 2007 and the child is younger than you (or your spouse if filing jointly), skip lines 4a and 4b; go to line 5.

Additional reporting conditions

6 Number of months child lived with you in the United States during 2026 • If the child lived with you for more than half of 2026 but less than 7 months, enter “7.” • If the child was born or died in 2026 and your home was the child’s home for more than half the time they were alive during 2026, enter “12.”

• You can’t claim the EIC for a child who didn’t live with you for more than half of the year. • If your child doesn’t have an SSN as defined in the instructions for Form 1040, line 27a, see the instructions. • If you take the EIC even though you are not eligible, you may not be allowed to take the credit for up to 10 years.

See the instructions for details. • It will take us longer to process your return and issue your refund if you do not fill in all lines that apply for each qualifying child.

Calculations and supporting information

You can’t claim the EIC for a child who didn’t live with you for more than half of the year, even if you paid most of the child’s living expenses. The IRS may ask you for documents to show you lived with each qualifying child. Documents you might want to keep for this purpose include school and childcare records and other records that show your child’s address.

If the child didn’t live with you for more than half of the year because of a temporary absence, birth, death, placement with you for foster or adoption, or kidnapping, see Exception to time lived with you in the instructions for Form 1040, line 27a. If the child was married or meets the conditions to be a qualifying child of another person (other than your spouse if filing a joint return), special rules apply. For details, see Married child or Qualifying child of more than one person in the instructions for Form 1040, line 27a.

A practical example

Two adults share a household in which a child lives. Before either return claims a child-related benefit, the taxpayers review the credit-specific relationship, residence and other eligibility rules and keep the records supporting the correct treatment.

This example illustrates the order of the review. It does not assume an unverified deduction, exemption, treaty rate or final tax amount. The applicable form instructions and the actual records determine the result.

Common mistakes to avoid with Schedule EIC 2026

  • A dependency release does not automatically transfer earned income credit eligibility.
  • Check each qualifying-child test rather than relying only on a dependent listing.
  • Use the applicable-year credit worksheets and identification rules.

Questions about Schedule EIC 2026

Does receiving or downloading this form mean I must file it?

A taxpayer provides qualifying-child information on this schedule when the earned income credit instructions require it. The form purpose and the applicable filing or furnishing conditions determine the action. Downloading a blank PDF does not itself create a filing obligation or establish eligibility for a tax benefit.

Can I file the draft PDF?

No. The linked target is marked as a draft. Use it to understand the proposed layout and prepare records, but wait for the applicable final filing version. Check the IRS source again before using any year-specific amount, worksheet or filing instruction.

What should I do if the underlying information is wrong?

A dependency release does not automatically transfer earned income credit eligibility. Keep the original record and the correction trail. The issuer correction process, an amended return and an updated certificate can be different procedures. Choose the process that matches the document and the actual error.

Which records should I keep with the completed form?

Retain the source documents, applicable worksheets, submitted version and filing or furnishing confirmations. For this form, the working file should include child identification records, relationship details, residence records. Keep continuing balances and prior-year support for as long as they remain relevant under the applicable recordkeeping rules.
